Naturalization - Becoming
an American Citizen

For those coming to America in search of a better life, obtaining U.S. citizenship represents the attainment of a lifelong dream. There are many steps along that road, but this is the point at which you have the opportunity to identify yourself as—and be accepted as—one of the American people, with your unique story now weaved into the grand tapestry of the ages, an integral part of the fabric of American society. Naturalization is the process through which this status is obtained.

To be eligible for naturalization, you must be at least 18 years old at the time you apply; able to read, write, and speak basic English (depending on age); and be “of good moral character” (GMC). GMC is determined on a case-by-case basis; the general standard adopted by USCIS is “character which measures up to the standards of average citizens of the community in which the applicant resides”. GMC must be demonstrated for a certain period of time prior to the application, generally five years.

While certain types of criminal convictions can preclude a finding of GMC, the law allows significant room to demonstrate rehabilitation. If your personal history includes any criminal cases or other issues that could be of concern to an officer reviewing your case, it is imperative that these issues be addressed head-on. Please contact us to review your case – with our thorough review and expert counsel, we will ensure that you are prepared to answer any GMC-related questions with confidence, demonstrating that you have been fully rehabilitated and prepared to be a model citizen.

To apply for naturalization, you must fall into one of the following categories:

If you fit one of these three categories and meet the basic requirements, our office can guide you through the steps to naturalization, from preparing and filing Form N-400, to completing a biometrics appointment, to preparing for your interview and citizenship test, to taking your Oath of Allegiance.

Becoming a U.S. citizen is the cherished dream of millions around the world – let us help us help you take the next step toward attaining it!
